KS2 - Earth and Space

This special space day for KS2 is designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum science space topic in an exciting and engaging way.

An alternative to many space visits which might offer just a 30-40 minute show, your pupils can spend the entire day immersed in a wide range of exciting space activities guided by an expert, exploring the stars and planets, meteorites, space travel and more...

What teachers say...

"Wonderful - an amazing experience for the pupils! They were talking about it for days afterwards..."

“Mike really brought space alive for the children, with a well thought out and appropriate narrative the children could access. Highly recommended!”

"A fantastic day for the children...."

There are different elements that are combined to create a fantastic space day. The day is packed with interaction and hands-on activities.

We will work with you to optimise the content to make the visit memorable, exciting and educational, and relevant to your curriculum aims.

The elements listed below can usually be combined in a fascinating one-day visit,  depending on timetables, number of pupils etc

Exploring the Planets

Topics: Earth and Space, Forces, Light,
Method: Extensive Hands-On Practical. Some Presentation and Discussion.

In this hands-on and practical session, pupils will develop their understanding of the solar system by planning their own mission to the planets, and the training astronauts undertake in order to work effectively in space.
The class is broken down into groups, with each group having one particular planet that they will they will find out about, in order to present back to their class.

Each group will use a computer simulator to determine the optimal spacecraft trajectory to their planet, building an understanding as they do so the way the planets move and how this has to be taken into account, undertake a practical experiment mixing ‘rocket fuel’ (actually a pH experiment) , handle original artefacts from the exploration of space such as parts removed from genuine spacecraft etc, and deduce answers to many questions.

Pupils will naturally absorb key curriculum learning objectives through the activities they undertake - for instance finding out about the layout and orbits of the planets whilst planning their space-probes path to them...

The aim is to combine engagement and fun with real learning.

Travelling into Space

Topics: Earth and Space, Forces, Light, History
Method: Presentation, Discussion, some practical.

An interactive session which looks at the history and evolution of space travel from the earliest ideas of rockets through to the most recent developments in space travel.

During this session we discuss the explorations of the moon which enables us to talk about the moon itself, but also light and forces.

Meteorites

Topics: Earth and Space, Forces, Light, History
Method: Presentation, Discussion, some practical.

A fascinating and absorbing topic.

Starting by looking at the craters of the Moon (and creating our own small craters in- class as we do so!...) your pupils will handle and examine real meteorites, with not only impressive specimens but also scientifically important ones, learn where they come from and what they are.

They will also find out about shooting stars and even how they could find their own micro-meteorites!

A Space-Age Life

Topics: Earth and Space, Forces, Light
Method: Hands-On Practical. Presentation and Discussion.

This is a really engaging in fun session with which we usually round off the day. Using as a basis the comparison of life between the space race era of the 1950s and 1960s with life today it has been designed to bring together and reinforce many of the key concepts we have studied during the day, through the science principles behind the toys and games of the 1960s, and explores the development of technology.
