AMAZING SCIENCE

Exploring the Mysteries of Light and the Atomic Realm...

A fascinating one-day workshop for anyone interested in science. Balancing practical experiments and demonstrations with discussions and explanations, this is a challenging, but exciting and accessible workshop for adults - there is no maths required, and no previous science knowledge is needed!

Be prepared to encounter ideas at the cutting edge, and your preconceptions of reality to be challenged - in a good way! The day is designed to be informal and relaxed, and includes hands-on practical elements such as create your very own hologram, and observing the splitting of the atom, discussion, full notes and handouts, and many opportunities for your questions to be answered.

During the workshop, you will explore three fascinating and complementary areas:

Part 1 - The Structure of Matter

Atoms, and how they make up everything. Atoms themselves have strange, fascinating, and intricate structures. You will learn about what is going on at the very heart of matter, and build apparatus to observe subatomic particles decaying in real time!

The quantum realm of subatomic physics is a strange place, where common sense rules don't seem to apply. Prepare to be introduced to this weird and wonderful world.

Part 2 - Light & Holography - The 3D Image

Everyone has seen holograms – the amazing 3-dimensional images that can seem quite magical. During the workshop, you will not only learn about the mysterious properties of light and gain an understanding of the way holograms actually work, but also create your very own 3D hologram to take away and keep.

Using diode lasers, you will experiment and uncover real surprises about the way in which light behaves, followed by the opportunity to create our own real hologram, perhaps using something that you have brought along to image. This hologram is yours to keep (and, of course,  show others!)

Part 3 - The Messages in Light

When Sir Isaac Newton split white light into a spectrum, he little realized the information that lay within the beams of coloured light.

The analysis of light, called Spectroscopy, can give us information about both the smallest and largest things in the Universe - from the structure of individual atoms to what stars thousands of light years distant from us are made of, and even whether these distant stars have planets...

During the workshop you will not only learn about the key principles of spectroscopy, but build and use your own equipment and begin to probe the structure of atoms.
